Reality TV Eligibility

Well, I am another year older, another year wiser. Someone once said, “Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.” I believe in that, and have never been the person to dread birthdays, or hide my age. For some reason this year, as I near my thirties and can now classify myself in my “late twenties” (oh, how crazy), I seem to equate my age with the number of reality TV shows I am no longer eligible for. Sure, I missed the boat on Laguna Beach a long time ago, but cow-country Klein Oak probably wasn’t MTV’s top location anyway. It was hard coming to the conclusion that due to my age, I wouldn’t make the cut for the next season of Real World. Sure, the producers probably aren’t scouring America looking for a married, mom of two who thinks a good night includes a diet coke and reality TV….but that is neither here nor there. I am now too old. I guess I should look on the bright side, I can still go to the American Idol auditions, and I would bet money I would make it on TV if I did. Maybe Big Brother is looking for a boring girl in her late twenties that could eat more PB&J sandwiches than anyone else in the house.
Every year, I become more and more like my parents. I actually caught myself calculating how old I was by subtracting my birth year from the current year. How I miss the days where I could simply tell someone my age by holding up six fingers. What stresses did I have then? No work. No money. No dieting. No making sure the ‘piderman boxers are clean. I wouldn’t trade places though (not for more than a couple of days a week anyway). On this birthday, I have to stop and acknowledge how truly blessed I am…6 and a half wonderful years of marriage, 2 great kids, and half way up the career ladder (probably ahead of the game in the eyes of most). Sure I don’t have a real world/road rules challenge under my belt (or 17 like most of the contestants), but I am content and happy! Thank you Lord! That isn’t to say being ‘ahead of the game’ doesn’t have its negatives. The other day I was showing Jeff a picture from 3 years ago of Me/Kellie/Mica that Mica had posted. He looked at the picture, and then turned quickly to look at me, and said with little hesitation, “wow, you were HOT!” (Okay, so he didn’t emphasize ‘were’, but I heard it that way). He must have noticed the look on my face, because he quickly tried to dig himself out of the hole with, “no, no, no, I’m just saying you’ve aged a lot since then.” Gee Thanks. Stop there. Save the rest of the compliments for another day. But he was right. I have aged a lot since that picture, and in a good way. Three years ago, no one made me ‘piderman cupcakes on my birthday. All in all, I am glad to be another year older.

# re: Reality TV EligibilityYou better be glad that you ended your poor 'birthday saga' with how blessed you are...I was working up a good reply for you until the end. Always remember that I am older than you AND about 5 steps behind you (1. marriage, 2. first home, 3. first child, 4. second home, 5. second child), so no complaining from your 'late twenties' mouth!!! I try not to remember how far behind I am from ALL of my friends...

# re: Reality TV EligibilityOh, and I have friends too.....some that like me some of the time, some that like me all of the time, some that get mad at me when I tell them I already know what a 360 review is, some that get away with more funny/rude comments than me.
